Can’t decide which season is the perfect timing to visit Bulgaria? I understand the importance of deciding ahead of time because even though I’m the queen of misadventures, I’m afraid I’ll never gracefully master how do we deal with failed OOTDs, failed itinerary and a failed expectation. Emphasis on the last part, I’m sure nobody wants to deal with that… ever. So if you fancy going to Bulgaria but still can’t make up a fixed plan, here’s a guide that might help you get around this beautiful country in the Balkans– even if you decide to book that last-minute flight. Without further adieu, here are my TOP 5 things to do in Bulgaria all year round.
1. Visit the museums
Bulgaria is one great historical site and I am totally in love with it. It is rich with traces from the past and it effortlessly shows while you’re just walking around the city most especially in Sofia, its capital city. This is why visiting museums should be on top of your list of things to do in Bulgaria. You’ll easily find museums in its largest cities.
Here is a list of some of the most popular museums all across Bulgaria. Some of them are the biggest (or one of the biggest in the entire Balkan Peninsula).
The National History Museum
Located on the outskirts of Sofia, this museum holds the biggest collection of relics all throughout Bulgaria’s history.
Sofia History Museum
This museum in the heart of the city tells a story about how Sofia became Bulgaria’s capital city. Visit this museum to know about the Ancient Serdica and its interesting tale.
Ruse Eco-museum with Aquarium
This eco-museum in Ruse holds treasures from the Danube River banks– from plants, animals, and other living organisms. Expect to see four-floors filled with fossils and a life-sized Mammoth replica. This is also the biggest river-water aquarium in Bulgaria.
Stara Zagora History Museum
If you want to visit an actual Roman street, this museum in Stara Zagora is a must on your list of things to do in Bulgaria. Deep down the grounds of this museum, you will see a 2000-year-old culture-rich Roman city.
Bulgaria National Archaeological Museum
I’ve been here during one of my visits to Bulgaria and I wished I had allotted more time to explore the museum deeper. Read my experience here.
2. Visit the Rhodope mountain
The Rhodope mountain offers various activities all year round. Hot springs and mountain resorts in this mountain range offer a relaxing getaway for both summer and winter season. Skiing and winter sports are also very popular in the mountains of Pamporovo and Chepelare where thousands of visitors come to visit. Festivals and outdoor events are also very frequent during the summer season in the mountains. Be sure to check them out while plotting your things to do in Bulgaria.
Here’s when I tried skiing for the very first time in Pamporovo:
3. Party like a rockstar
The cold never bothered me anyway when I visited Bulgaria during the winter of 2017. We were out in the freezing cold and partied all night long on Christmas Eve. To summarize that moment, I could say that it was one of the best parties ever! Bulgarians know how to groove and they are one of the best companies.
4. Try out Bulgarian cuisines
Although foreign to my taste buds, Bulgarian cuisines are incredibly good. If you want to get to know more of the Bulgarian culture, be sure to dig into some of their traditional cuisines! Each dish will surely say something about its rich history.
5. Visit nearby countries
Bulgaria is close to Greece and Turkey. In fact, it can be reached by bus or private car. If you have time to spare, take a quick visit to these neighboring countries. You can also check out this 10 Best Daytrips from Bulgaria in TripAdvisor.
There you go! My TOP 5 Things to do in Bulgaria all year round. Whether its freezing cold or blazing hot, you can never go wrong with this list.
