For many people, a trip to somewhere in America just has to be on the bucket list! With so many states and territories to explore, you could spend months in the USA and still not have seen it all. There are some must-see tourist destinations if you’re planning on visiting America, such as the Statue of Liberty, the Grand Canyon, and even Disney World in Orlando. However, if you want to get off the beaten track in the USA then here are some ways to do just that!

Get lost

Okay, so if you read about my latest misadventures in Hong Kong, then you’ll know that getting lost can be a scary thing. However, as long as you don’t get too lost, it can be a fun way to explore a new place.

Instead of planning out your trip down to the minute, take some time to explore without any itinerary. Get lost down the streets of New Orleans or rent a car and drive to the quietest beach you can find in Florida. Just make sure you know how you’re going to find your way back and that you have plenty of battery on your phone!

Hop on the bus

One of the most exciting ways to explore the USA is by bus. You will get to see a whole lot more if you travel by road, but it’s a lot cheaper than hiring a car and going on a road trip. 25% of travellers admit to missing a flight, so getting a bus will ensure that doesn’t happen!

Greyhound buses are a fun and cost-effective way to get off the beaten track in the USA while being able to fit in plenty more destinations on a budget. You can also get night buses and save on accommodation costs.

Ask a local

There are plenty of sites that will connect you with locals in a particular part of the world, so put them to good use. Find someone who lives in the area you’re going to visit and ask them to take you on a tour of where they live. You’ll get to experience plenty of hidden gems that only people who live in the area will know. Avoid the tourist traps and explore some of the best places to eat and drink or some of the best hiking trails that only a local would know about.

Road trip

I’ve already talked about getting a bus around America to see more than you would by flying everywhere. However, if you have a little more money to spare and want to do it like they do in the movies, you need to go on a road trip.

There are plenty of companies in the USA that will let you hire a car from one state and drop it off in another. You can drive from one end of the country if you’re feeling brave or just take one of the many popular routes already mapped out, such as Route 66.

Underrated places

Before you make your way over to America, look into some of the most underrated destinations in the USA. Swap a popular tourist trap with somewhere a little less visited. For example, head to Letchworth State Park in New York instead of the Grand Canyon. If you’re planning on visiting Mount Rushmore, head to Devil’s Tower in Wyoming on the way — or instead of! There are plenty of guides out there covering underrated places in the USA, so plan your trip around these.

These are just some of the many ways to get off the beaten track in the USA and have a real adventure (or misadventure). Do you have any other tips and tricks? Let me know in the comments!
